A group of Police who are saving and changing their community

Story and reporting by: Mr. Alexander Yakubu - Group Facilitator Uba office

In all of Nigeria corruption has destroyed individuals and communities confidence in the police and other security forces the government has put in place for the good and safety of citizens. There are so many sad and unsettling stories that can be told about the damage, unrest, death and pain caused by those who should be able to be trusted to help and protect.

This story is changing steadily in Uba Nigeria as the SALT Nigeria savings solution has come to the Police Station. Close Association a little group of 12 officers formed and began to SAVE | LEARN and GROW together. From the beginning it was clear that there are many challenges to be overcome. Drunkenness, marriage problems and financial difficulties were all present in the group.

“ Testimonies are coming out of life changes in the families as the lessons being taught are challenging many things in their lives.”

— Close Group

Today the group has grown to 27 members who are all police officers in Uba. There are 7 women and 20 men in the group and testimonies are coming out of life changes in the families as the lessons being taught are challenging many things in their lives. The Close group has taken an interest in helping the community and has used their social fund (a collection taken up at every meeting for social good) to assist widows, orphans and those who are less privileged in the local community. What a change and a blessing as the group members say that the group has helped them so much and they want to share with others. It is a goal for this group to live an exemplary life and show a good example to other police officers and the community at large. Praise the Lord!!
